John Holland
(1929-2015)
John Holland was a professor of psychology and Professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor., where in 1959 he received the first Ph.D. in computer science. He joined the
Santa Fe Institute in 1987 and added the idea of adaptation to their complex systems research program. launching the study of complex adaptive systems.
Holland also developed the idea of genetic algorithms, which use biological principles like natural selection to find solutions to complex problems.
